He is an Assistant Clinical Professor of Psychiatry at Mt. Sinai Medical School in NY where he participates in the clinical and scholarly activities of the Student Trainee Mental Health and ADHD Center of Excellence programs.
He studied at Tulane University in New Orleans, LA, and graduated Cum Laude with a Bachelor's Degree in Biomedical Engineering. He completed his medical education at Rutgers New Jersey Medical School (NJMS), NJ receiving a Doctorate in Medicine. Dr. Kaplan stayed at NJMS for his residency in general Psychiatry and continued his training at Icahn Mount Sinai Medical School in New York where he completed a fellowship in Child and Adolescent Psychiatry.
In addition to clinical work, Dr. Kaplan participates in academic and leadership roles. During residency, he served on the University Hospital Quality Improvement Steering Committee, was co-chair of the Psychiatry Program’s Communications Committee and co-directed the 2021 Urban Mental Health Conference. He developed curriculum and served as Course Lead for the NJMS Preclinical Psychiatry Course, and regularly teaches Child and Adolescent Psychiatry lectures for medical students, residents, and fellows at Icahn Mount Sinai Medical School.
He served as a 2022 PRITE Fellow for Child and Adolescent Psychiatry through the American College of Psychiatrists. Dr. Kaplan’s research focus is on clinical applications of nature in psychotherapy. He has presented at national conferences and authored book chapters on a wide variety of behavioral health topics. He co-edited the textbook "Nature Therapy", published by the American Psychiatric Publishing Company.
He is a Clinical Professor of Psychiatry at Rutgers NJ Medical School and Board Certified in Adult and Child Psychiatry, ABPN and a Distinguished Life Fellow, at both the American Psychiatric Association and the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry.
A graduate of UBA, Argentina, he completed adult and child psychiatric training at New York Hospital-Cornell Medical Center. As a researcher, he was principal investigator, co-investigator, and site director of studies in the areas of childhood fire-setting, adolescent violent and suicidal behavior, and long acting antipsychotics.
He authored, co-authored, and edited books, book chapters, and papers, in the fields of suicide, ADHD, substance abuse, violence, long acting antipsychotics, psychopharmacology, autism spectrum disorder and forensic psychiatry.
He is well known in the US medical education field, having chaired multiple courses and symposia since 1997. He also lectures internationally in Spain, Italy, Argentina, France, and Greece. He served on several NJ state committees addressing child mental health issues leading to significant policy implementation and system of care advancements. He developed novel models for addressing behavioral health problems in High School and College settings.
